I'd rate this 3。5 actually。 I did read it in two days， so it definitely kept my interest。 Once I was finished and thought about it though， I didn't think it was up there with some of Roux' others。 So much of the plot seemed to contain yawning holes。 **SPOILERS AHEAD！** Who was the coffee drinker in the magic shop？ You can't show a mysterious man in black and not explain him！ I expected Straven to be his patsy， but if that was the idea， it wasn't well developed。 Why was it mainly adults who walke I'd rate this 3。5 actually。 I did read it in two days， so it definitely kept my interest。 Once I was finished and thought about it though， I didn't think it was up there with some of Roux' others。 So much of the plot seemed to contain yawning holes。 **SPOILERS AHEAD！** Who was the coffee drinker in the magic shop？ You can't show a mysterious man in black and not explain him！ I expected Straven to be his patsy， but if that was the idea， it wasn't well developed。 Why was it mainly adults who walked into the sea？ I doubt their folks and the police wouldn't be totally accepting of a shrug and an "oh， it's complicated" to account for the girls' 72 hour disappearance， especially if they materialized on the pier out of the blue （and with a pair of scissors stuck in one of them）。 At the very least they should have implicated Straven in their disappearance。 And speaking of which， the epilogue also left me totally bewildered。 So， was Adelle not Adelle？ She was turned into a Cthulhu wannabe， willing to wait a year to snack on Straven？ I assume that the "Yes， she had a path" in the epilogue foreshadowed that she wasn't quite herself。 Well， with all that being said， I enjoyed the book， especially the Pennyfarthings。 I thought they were the best developed and most interesting part of the plot。 Great for anyone getting interested in the Cthulhu mythos。 。。。more

2，5 stars。 Had some good charachters and some interesting plot， but very confusing story， some things just didn’t make sense。 Missed more explenations。 Would have liked to know more about what the ending meant and how it was linked to eatlier parts in the book and what happenes to the other charachters in the book。

This plot is super intriguing， I mean what reader would pass up the chance to explore their favourite fictional world？ For me personally this book fell flat， there were definitely interesting parts and I enjoyed reading it。 However， there really weren’t any wow moments throughout the story and I found many parts to be quite predictable。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 I guess for a lot of readers of the genres that Madeline Roux blends here this one hasn’t really stuck but， for me， well I was spellbound （pun intended）。 I’ve been waiting to read this book ever since reading Madeline Roux’s wonderfully tragic entry in the From A Certain Point of View: 40 Years of Star Wars anthology。 She wrote about Alderaan’s destruction and I immediately sought out other stories and books， and was dismayed to find that what couple of books I found， had all received less than I guess for a lot of readers of the genres that Madeline Roux blends here this one hasn’t really stuck but， for me， well I was spellbound （pun intended）。 I’ve been waiting to read this book ever since reading Madeline Roux’s wonderfully tragic entry in the From A Certain Point of View: 40 Years of Star Wars anthology。 She wrote about Alderaan’s destruction and I immediately sought out other stories and books， and was dismayed to find that what couple of books I found， had all received less than stellar ratings。 Still when I read the premise for The Book of Living Secrets， I was hooked。 I was upset that the book was not to be released until March of this year。 I felt a genuine excitement to read Roux’s book and the wanting to find it， ahhh; it’s one of my favorite parts of being a book nerd- when you’ve got a book you’re desperate to track down， and finally find a copy， a physical copy， in a physical store， and lean in and breathe the woody pulp that is the ground for a new adventure， it’s a feeling that I’ve become used to but seem to find new ways to love every time it happens。 Ok enough sentimentality。 The Book of Living Secrets is an adventure story and a fun one。 The dialogue is sometimes droll and sometimes cheesy， but the characters Adelle and Connie were fleshed out as were the characters of the novel “Moira” （except one who became so hateful and mean， I couldn’t help but root for the character to get their comeuppance） And the people overtaken by supernaturally induced madness？！ And the monsters from other dimensions？！ And the world coming to an end？！ How freaking cool is that？？ Sure， others point out in their reviews for this book- others have done it better， so don’t bother。 I counter that: bother。 It’s worth it。 I thought so at least。 It didn’t feel to me as if Madeline Roux wrote this book trying to explain some different or clever way of looking at the world。 She just naturally tells really good stories about people facing their dooms。 （Final thing: I do agree with this criticism lobbed at The Book of Living Secrets， at least by reviews I’ve seen here on Goodreads， that is， I too wish Madeline Roux would’ve slowed down a tad and better yet， had broken the book up for the possibility of sequels。 There’s a lot that happens as the story races to the end and it’s a bit too relentless。） 。。。more
